Spedlins Castle is the perfect property for family/friends to meet for a holiday or celebration.
The Great Hall, with its roaring fire, large kitchen and dining room with seating for up to 14, combine to make an amazing entertaining space for guests.
On the floor above are 3 double, 1 twin bedroom and a bathroom.
On the 4th floor another double bedroom, plus a dormitory room with 4 single beds and a 3rd bathroom.
The grounds extend to 4 acres and include beautiful gardens and a lake.
The space
With it's magical tower, rising some 80ft above the Dumfries and Galloway countryside, this unique home is just as incredible inside as it looks from the outside.
9ft thick stone walls have stood the test of time since 1450 and are packed with history and centuries of stories, this home is an absolute gem as it nestles by the banks of the River Annan.
Exploring the castle for the first time is a wonderful experience, with a wealth of turrets, nooks and staircases to discover.
Entering Spedlins Castle through the original oak front door, the mediaeval quirks of the architecture are immediately apparent, as you climb the ancient spiral stone staircase, you will be immediately enchanted!
Ground Floor
Opposite the main entrance door you will find a TV room with comfortable sofa and smart TV with Sky, just off this room is a handy laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer and an additional fridge for the convenience of larger parties. Also on the ground floor you will find a cloakroom WC.
First Floor
The absolute showstopper of course is the Great Hall, with a high vaulted ceiling, minstrels gallery, window nooks and Renaissance fireplace so huge you could walk inside, it offers our guests a true castle stay experience. As with the rest of the castle, the Great Hall is dressed with antique furniture and eclectic art pieces collected over many years by the owners.
Two long sofas make for a fabulous space to relax with family and friends and, in the evening, you can light the fire and play music, curl up with a good book or enjoy family games night!
Second Floor
Climb the second of the original stone staircases to arrive at the second floor of the castle.
Here you will find the large fully equipped kitchen which offers the perfect space for meal preparation, with it's own 'casual' dining area, it is the perfect spot for breakfast, a light lunch or informal evening meal and with it's own fireplace for a cosy fire the room is just a dream space for socialising with 'the cook' of the party.
Formal dining can be held in the beautiful dining room, with large dining table which will comfortably seat up to 14 guests, you are surrounded by a stunning library displaying an impressive collection of antique books. The dining room really is the perfect location for a family gathering or celebration.
Third Floor
On the third floor you will find 4 beautifully presented bedrooms which are all as impressive as each other, each with a romantic, whimsical feel the first has a stunning carved four poster bed, another a large antique French bed and another again with a double bed built into a charming and cosy alcove, the fourth bedroom has twin beds, some have seating areas or dressing tables located within the castle turrets, window seats and chairs in nooks in other rooms mean that each is unique and truly stunning.
Also on the second floor is a large retro styled bathroom with it's own bookcase! The spacious room offers a full size bath with hand held shower, basin, WC along with a seating area.
Fourth Floor
Climbing the more modern spiral staircase will take you to the highest part of the castle.
Here you will find another beautifully appointed double bedroom again decorated with antique furniture and completely unique, next door is a great room for children, the 'dormitory room' has four single beds and a lovely beamed ceiling, children absolutely adore this room and rarely want to leave!
Also on the fourth floor is another bathroom with charming coombed ceiling, full size bath and shower unit.
Outside Space
Outside the castle you will find four acres of beautiful grounds to explore, including a lake, a medieval-style topiary garden and a terrace for sipping drinks together on a summer evening, absolute bliss!
Spedlins is situated right next to the River Annan where you can sit and picnic on the river bank in the summer months and where wild swimming is possible. The Annan is filled with trout and salmon and it's a great spot for fishing. There are some beautiful walks directly from the front door including the Annandale Way which passes the castle gates, here you can walk along the deserted lanes where Robert Burns once journeyed on horseback!
The Area
The nearest towns are Lockerbie and Moffat where you will find a selection of great restaurants.
The castle is located in a very tranquil spot, full of history. There are plenty of things to do nearby - whether it's whisky tasting, fishing, clay pigeon shooting or golf, there really is something for everyone, information for some of the activities available within the region will be included in the digital manual you will receive once booked.
If nobody in your party feels like cooking, we would be more than happy to put you directly in touch with local chefs where you can arrange either a special meal or catering for your entire stay!
Our Ghost!
Did we mention we have a resident ghost! Old 'Dunty' Porteous lives and is securely locked up in the castle dungeons, although he hasn't bothered anyone for many a long decade he does make for interesting reading and much information about him and the history of the castle can be found online.
Weddings
We are delighted to accommodate small, intimate weddings of up to 14 people within the castle, it is the perfect setting for your special day. Where the weather allows the ceremony can be held outdoors in the beautiful gardens or indoors in the Great Hall.

Other things to note
The tower rises to 80 feet and is four stories high. The various floors are reached via the original stone spiral staircases, this means the castle is not suitable for guests with restricted mobility, for safety, children and adults need to hold onto the rope which runs all along the stone spiral staircase.
